Tradition characterizes Ponce, where real Puerto Rico starts. So if it's tradition, fine food, and relaxation you're seeking, we highly recommend Hotel Meliá.
Meliá Hotel Highlights:
Meliá Hotel is located directly in front of one of Puerto Rico's most photographed tourist attractions, Parque de Bombas. It is home to spectacular roof-top views of the city, one of Puerto Rico's finest chef's (Mark French). Surprisingly to most, all of the hotel's water comes from a crystal pure natural spring under the hotel.
The hotel also has Internet access service complete with WIFI and computers and printers for guests (in the business center). It also has a pool area complete with hammocks and sun loungers, a perfect place to take a day of rest after a week’s worth of sightseeing.
Just like in the movies
Stepping into the lobby of Meliá feels like a time warp back to the 1930s. Stunning shiny ceramic tile floors, simple yet elegant furniture, beautiful chandeliers hanging from the roof and stylized arcs on the walls set the mood of tropical elegance. The service at the reception desk is very good. The people there will even walk you up to the rooms so you can select your favorite.
Insider Info: A Little History
Meliá Hotel is the city’s oldest operating hotel, founded in 1908 by the Spaniard Bartolomé “Bartolo” Meliá, who turned his bakery and near buildings into the hotel. It has since evolved with the addition of more rooms and a restaurant, though it’s worth mentioning that it has no relationship with the Meliá Hotels chain from Spain.
Famous Guests
The hotel guest list includes some of the most influential people from the United States and Latin America over the last 50 years, including Franklin Roosevelt, Jorge Negrete and Mario Moreno “Cantinflas”.
Must-Eat Cuisine
The restaurant at the hotel is called Marks at the Meliá, and is considered to be one of the best in all of Puerto Rico. Its owner is award winning Chef Mark French. The restaurant specializes in fresh seafood, beef and lamb entrées, in addition to appetizers that include Sauteed Smoked Salmon with Caramelized Mango.
We recommend…
We recommend that you stay in the bigger rooms if you can, even though there are just two on every floor. They’re equipped with two enormous beds, but the rooms are still spacious enough to allow you to freely walk around. You'll find the rooms are furnished as one would expect, with stools, chairs, a writer’s desk, television, and a mini bars. What distinguishes these rooms from the rest is that they also have a terrace with a view of the entire Plaza Las Delicias and the rest of the historical district, a perfect place to spend a quiet and insightful night.
