Serralles' four well-trecked attractions include:

  • The Castle Museum, a guided tour

Sitting high above the City of Ponce is the four-story, reinforced concrete 1930s family mansion, dubbed by locals as The Serralles Castle for its grandeur. Today, the mansion is a well-run museum and testament to the sugar mill and rum industries, once the driving force of the Puerto Rico economy.

The Spanish Revival mansion (whose architectural style is cousin to the Arts & Crafts, Mission Revival and Pueblo styles in the United States) was designed by Pedro Adolfo de Castro, the first Puerto Rican architect to graduate from American universities and then return to work in Puerto Rico.

Today, a group of dedicated Ponce citizens directs the non-profit corporation that maintains the museum, administered by the City of Ponce.

Tip: Eat before you go or pack a lunch, snacks, water and sunscreen. The on-site snack bar (in the Castle) has a limited selection of microwavable snacks.

If you like history, architecture and spectacular views, spend three or more hours on the hills of Ponce overlooking the City and dramatic vista of the Caribbean Sea.

Notes of Interest:

The Serralles family is the last Puerto Rican family on the island that (legally) continues the rum distillation tradition, manufacturing and distributing more than 60 percent of the rum sold in Puerto Rico. It's doubtful you'll encounter Puerto Rico's moonshine "Cañita" or "Pitorro" as a visiting tourist, but Serralles Distillery rums can be purchased under the brand names Don Q, Ron Llave, Palo Viejo and Granado. The company also produces Ronrico and Captain Morgan for distribution by Seagram's in the United States.

Don Juan Serralles, whose Spanish father settled in Puerto Rico, began the family's fortunes in 1865 opening the Hacienda Mercedita sugar plantation (near the current Mercedita Airport, where sugar cane molasis imported from the Dominican Republic is still transformed into rum to this day).  Don Félix Juan Serrallés, Jr., don Juan’s greatgrandson, presides over the company in present times.

  • The Castle Gardens

A pleasant sloping garden with fountains, orchids and other flowers has full sun all day and benches for enjoying the view over the city and pleasant Caribbean breezes.

  • The Lookout Cross (La Cruceta del Vigia)

An enormous cross appears to embrace the city below, but this 100-foot high modern cement and glass structure is really a monument to the old wooden cross-shaped lookout tower, where for decades brave souls stood to keep an eye out for pirate ships bound for Ponce's bay.  At the sign of pirate invasion, they sounded the alarm to protect the citizens below. Local lore says one dedicated scout remained at his post day and night for years, his equally dedicated mule trodding up and down the hill to bring him provisions.

Ascending the tower today is much easier and well worth the trip to get a 360-degree birdseye view of the surrounding mountains, ocean, countryside and city.

  • The new Japanese Gardens

The newest feature at Vigia Hill is a Japanese Garden, a quiet place that, like all Japanese gardens, establishes a natural setting of tranquility through the use of ponds, streams, dry areas, elevated bridges, bonsai and natural plantings.  Visit and meditate for while.

Plus Some Interesting Shopping

  • The "Vivero" Garden and Plant Shop

Here you'll find tropical plants and hybrid orchids whose sales go to support the administration of the museum and attractions.

  • La Cava Wine, Spirits and Tobacco Shop

In a corner of the museum store you can browse and purchase local and imported spirts and wines.
