Like many small cities competing for the limelight with their larger sisters (think St. Paul to Minneapolis, Houston to Dallas), Ponce has developed a unique and proud culture.  Nothing better expresses this pride than perhaps  the humor from the region.

Ponceños, as the locals are called, say "Ponce is Ponce, the rest is parking."  This is in reference to the massive traffic jams experienced in the San Juan metropolitan area where highways resemble parking lots certain times of the day.

And a local joke expresses Ponceño's reputation for pride. "What's the city in Puerto Rico that's nearest heaven?" asked one gentleman to another. "Juana Díaz... because its next door to Ponce."
